HISTORY

DVSC was formed on 12 March 1902 under the name of Egyetértés Football Club. They separated from Egyetértés in the summer of 1912 to set up Debreceni Vasutas Sport Club. Over its history of more than 100 years the club has counted five wins in the Hungarian championship (2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010), four the Hungarian Cup and five the Hungarian Super Cup as well.

Egyetértés Futball Club, 1902

The team has entered Europe on several occasions and also delegated a number of players to the Hungarian national squad. As for the early days DVSC played in the Northern Military Championship between 1920 and 1926 winning the title 5 times there. Everything looked bright for the young club until professionalism was introduced in Hungarian football in 1926 seeing the emerge of a rival club Bocskay in Debrecen which was organized out of the players of three teams including DVSC in a few month. This new team became the best football team in Debrecen for the next decade and a half winning the Cup in 1930 and finishing third in the league in 1933-34. DVSC were playing in lower divisions during these years.
Around 1940 the strict pro-amateur differentiation was no longer in effect,  Bocskay went bankrupt so quickly DVSC became the city’s No. 1 team again mounting serious challenges to make it to the top league. The goal was finally achieved int 1942-43 and they managed to stay up for four consecutive years before they got relegated again. In the next 50 years the team were in and out of the first division having to face relegation not less than seven times. In 1967 the team even got relegated to Division 3.
Although the founders chose red-white as the team colours it changed a few times in the coming decades, in 1925 it was green-white when Debrecen MÁV TK joined DVSC and however strange it seems the kit colours were changed to violet-white from 1937. After WW2 the team returned to the original colours and kept it up to now apart from a short period when the unified DMTE-DVSC team were wearing yellow-blue.
After the Second World War the communist sport policy was the ruling factor in the lives of fooball clubs and Debrecen were no different. The name of the club were changed on a few occasions, 1948-49: Debreceni Vasutas Sport Egyesület, then from 1949 to 1955: Debrecen Locomotive (that is when the nickname ’Loki’ was born). 1955-56: Törekvés and between 1957 and 79 it was Debreceni Vasutas SC.

DMVSC, 1985

In 1979 DVSC was joined by DMTE forming Debreceni Munkás Vasutas Sportclub (DMVSC) and this fusion lasted ten years to see DVSC returning to the ancients under the name of Debreceni Vasutas Sport Club.
The golden age of Loki started in 1993 when the team returned to Division 1 and finished 3rd the following year under the guidance of legendary manager Lajos Garamvölgyi. Six years later the first real success was achieved also, the team won the Hungarian Cup in 1999. In a very busy year in 2001 János Pajkos took over to win the Cup again which was little consolation for another relegation from the first division. Lady luck smiled on the team when Budapest team BKV Előre rejected promotion giving way to the best relegated team to stay up.
Also in 2001 a successful local businessman Gábor Szima stepped up as chairman to chase away all clouds from the Debrecen horizon. He wanted to prove that money and a series and good decisions can manage a footbal club to a good prosperous future even in Hungary. He was aware of the fact that the team will not be profitable for a good while but that did not stop him.
Loki went in Europe again to play such teams as Wolfsburg and Bordeaux who we actually beat 3-1.
Under the guidance of Lázár Szentes the team finished third in the league in two consecutive years (2003,2004) also finishing runners up in the Hungarian Cup in 2003 after getting beaten by Ferencváros in the Final. A series of good results in the 2003/2004 UEFA cup series also did Debrecen’s people proud keeping the team’s hopes alive until spring which had been achieved by no other Hungarian clubs in the previous 20 years. Belgian side FC Brugge finally stopped us with 1-0 on aggregate.

The third champion win! 2007

The dream finally came true in 2005 when Loki finished top of the Hungarian league for the first time ever. The success was achieved with Manager Attila Supka who took over from Lázár Szentes in mid season. Supka did manage to achieve the same success a year later and the rivals did not get anything out of the challenge in 2007 either, that year under the management of Czech Republic coach Miroslav Beranek. Beranek was succeeded by local coach András Herczeg who had been Assistant Manager under Supka and Beranek also. With him the team finished second in the league in 2007-2008 and also brought home the Hungarian Cup for the third time in the club’s history after a comprehensive 9-1 aggregate win over Honved Budapest.
DVSC are now under the Hungarian sun thanks to Mr Szima, the Local Council and minor owners. Without any sensational signings Loki has managed to dominate in Hungarian Football. The new signings were always financially beneficial still capable of taking the team forward. Next step is to become an acknowledged team in Europe also.
